Wisdom Tooth Extraction in Oshawa

Rdental_75.jpg

Wisdom teeth are the last to arrive and the most likely to cause trouble, usually because there is no room left for them by the time they show up. Some settle in without a problem. Others come in sideways, get stuck halfway, or trap food and bacteria where a toothbrush cannot reach. Fret not, however, because if you’re looking for a wisdom tooth extraction in Oshawa, you’re exactly where you’re supposed to be.

At Ridgeview Dental, we are sedation dentists in Oshawa, offering wisdom tooth extraction with maximum patient comfort in mind. We are wholly owned by Dr. Calvin and Dr. Ryan, and they are who you see when you come in for your wisdom tooth extraction. In fact, Dr. Calvin has additional training in wisdom teeth extractions and in dental sedation, so you are not waiting weeks on an outside referral. After all, there’s a reason why our clients have rated us an impeccable 5-stars with over 250 Google reviews.

To get in touch for a wisdom tooth extraction in Oshawa, Whitby, Brooklin, Courtice and Port Perry, give us a call or book online.

Important Note: If you are having trouble breathing or swallowing, have uncontrolled bleeding, or have had a serious blow to the face, do not wait for a dental appointment. Go to your nearest emergency room or call 911.

Signs Your Wisdom Teeth Need Looking At

Flaring up right now, with swelling or a fever? That is an urgent problem rather than a routine booking. See our emergency dentist in Oshawa page, call us or book an urgent appointment.

Do You Really Need a Wisdom Tooth Extraction?

No, and we will not tell you otherwise. Wisdom teeth that have come through straight, that you can clean properly, and that are not damaging the tooth in front of them can often be left alone and monitored at your regular check-ups.

Removal is usually recommended when the tooth is impacted, when infection keeps returning, when decay has set in on a tooth you cannot clean, or when it is damaging the molar beside it. The deciding factor is the x-ray and the exam, not a rule of thumb. The good thing is we have the latest 3D scanners in house, so you’ll get the shortest turnaround time and will hardly be sent out on a referral.

What Happens at Your Appointment

When you come in for a wisdom tooth extraction at Ridgeview Dental, the entire process follows these 4 steps:

Both Dr. Calvin and Dr. Ryan are experienced with anxious patients, children and patients with special needs, and a plan made in advance works far better than one improvised on the day.

Wisdom Tooth Extraction Recovery

The first 24 hours.

Bite on the gauze as needed and instructed, rest, cold compress on the cheek, soft cool food. No rinsing, no spitting, no straws, no smoking. All of those can dislodge the clot that is our scaffolding for healing.

Days two and three.

Usually the peak of swelling. Gentle warm salt-water rinses can start now. Most people manage with over-the-counter pain relief.

Days four to seven.

Swelling, settling, eating is getting easier. Many people are back to normal routines, though a difficult impacted tooth can take longer.

Call us if:

pain gets worse rather than better around day three to five, which can signal a dry socket, or if you have a fever, spreading swelling, or bleeding that will not settle. These are fixable, and quickly, but they need to be seen.

Insurance and CDCP for Wisdom Tooth Extraction in Oshawa

We give you the cost in writing after the assessment, because a straightforward wisdom tooth extraction in Oshawa and a deeply impacted one are very different pieces of work, and often cost substantially different.

What essentially influences the final cost of a wisdom tooth extraction in Oshawa is a host of factors, such as:

  • whether the tooth is fully erupted or deeply impacted requiring surgery

  • type of sedation used, such as local numbing versus nitrous oxide or IV sedation

  • number of teeth being removed

  • initial diagnostic fees like 3D imaging and X-rays.

Direct insurance billing. We bill your insurer directly wherever possible, so you are not paying the full amount up front and claiming it back.

The CDCP does cover extractions, including surgical removal of teeth that have not fully erupted, and impacted wisdom teeth are generally covered when they are causing a problem. How much is covered depends on your income band under the plan, and because the CDCP pays against its own fee schedule rather than the Ontario fee guide, there can be a difference left over. We check your coverage and explain any co-payment before treatment starts.

At Ridgeview Dental, we understand that wisdom tooth extraction can be a costly procedure, and that's why we try our best to work with you and your available insurance coverage.

Why Oshawa Patients Choose Ridgeview Dental

Ridgeview is 100% locally owned and run by Dr. Calvin Richardson and Dr. Ryan Siciliano. Not a chain, not a corporate group.

Wisdom teeth extractions in Oshawa, from Windfields, Kedron, and Samac, to Northglen, Centennial and Taunton, are handled at our clinic on Thoroughbred Street in Windfields, North Oshawa. Given our strategic location, we welcome clients from nearby Whitby, Brooklin, Courtice, Bowmanville and Port Perry.

All wisdom tooth extraction procedures are handled at Ridgeview Dental by dentists with additional training in extractions and sedation, rather than referred out and scheduled around someone else’s waitlist.

Both Dr. Ryan and Dr. Calvin hold active ACLS certification and both serve as emergency dentists for the Oshawa Generals, so urgent and surgical work is familiar ground.

As we’re wholly owned by our resident dentists, you see the same dentist for the assessment, the extraction and the follow-up, which is how aftercare questions get answered by someone who was actually there with you since the day you walked in.

Wisdom Tooth Extraction Oshawa: Frequently Asked Questions

Will OHIP cover wisdom teeth removal?

No. OHIP does not cover dental treatment carried out in a dental office, including wisdom teeth.

The usual sources of help are private dental insurance and the Canadian Dental Care Plan, and we will check both for you before treatment.

How painful is wisdom tooth extraction?

During the procedure you are numb and should feel pressure rather than pain. Afterwards, soreness and swelling peak around day two or three and then ease. Most people manage with over-the-counter pain relief. If pain increases after day three rather than fading, call us, because that can be a dry socket and it is quickly treated.

Is there an alternative to wisdom tooth extraction?

Sometimes. If the tooth has erupted straight, you can clean it properly and it isn’t harming the tooth in front, monitoring it at regular check-ups is a legitimate option, and we will say so. Antibiotics can settle an infection temporarily, but they do not fix the cause, so the problem usually comes back. Where a tooth is impacted or repeatedly infected, removal is normally the treatment that ends it.

How long can a wisdom tooth go untreated?

A healthy, well-positioned wisdom tooth can go untreated indefinitely. A problematic one is a different story. Recurring infection, decay in a tooth you cannot clean, or pressure damaging the molar in front tend to get worse rather than better, and the longer an impacted tooth is left, the more likely it is that the neighbouring tooth needs treatment too. Pain that keeps returning is the tooth telling you the clock is running.

What are the signs wisdom teeth need removal?

Persistent ache at the back of the jaw, a swollen or tender gum flap over a partly visible tooth, a bad taste or smell that keeps returning, difficulty opening your mouth fully, swelling around the jaw, or repeated flare-ups that settle and come back. An x-ray settles it either way, and that is a short appointment.

Can I opt for sedation for wisdom tooth extraction?

Yes. Both dentists are certified in multiple levels of sedation, such as nitrous oxide through to IV conscious moderate sedation. Mention it when you book so we can plan the appointment properly, including arranging a drive home if you need one.

What age is best for wisdom teeth removal?

Late teens to early twenties tends to be the easier window, because the roots are not yet fully formed and the bone is more forgiving, which usually means a smoother recovery. That said, plenty of people have wisdom teeth removed in their thirties, forties and beyond with no trouble at all. The right time is when the tooth is causing a problem or an x-ray shows it is about to.

Will my insurance cover wisdom tooth extraction?

Most private plans cover extractions to some degree, often at a higher percentage than major work like crowns. Coverage varies by plan and by whether the tooth is impacted. Send us your plan details or bring them to the assessment and we will tell you where you stand, then bill your insurer directly where possible.

Is wisdom tooth extraction covered by OHIP or CDCP?

Not by OHIP. The CDCP does cover extractions, including surgical removal of teeth that have not fully erupted, which generally includes impacted wisdom teeth that are causing problems. How much is covered depends on your adjusted family net income band, and the plan pays against its own fee schedule, so there may be a difference left to pay. We explain your co-payment and any balance before we start.
