Is It a Dental Emergency, or Can It Wait?
Most dental problems are urgent rather than life-threatening. This table should help you work out which one you are dealing with.
When you are not sure, call. A two-minute phone conversation costs you nothing, and a small problem caught early is almost always cheaper and simpler to fix than the same problem two weeks later.
Dental Emergencies We Treat, and Who Treats Them
Ridgeview Dental is a locally dentist-owned and run clinic, managed by Dr. Calvin Richardson and Dr. Ryan Siciliano. They're both licensed and accredited general dentists with additional training in exactly the kinds of problems that turn into emergencies. Both hold active ACLS certification, and both serve as emergency dentists for the Oshawa Generals, so emergency dental care in Oshawa and surrounding cities are best handled by our team at our clinic, rather than referred somewhere else.
Here's some of those dental emergency cases we treat at our clinic:

Severe Toothache
Usually an infection reaching the nerve of the tooth. We find the cause with an exam and digital x-ray, get you out of pain, and treat the source rather than handing you antibiotics and sending you away. Most root canal treatments are handled in-house, with only very complex cases referred to a specialist.
Wisdom Tooth Pain
A partially erupted wisdom tooth traps food and bacteria and can flare up overnight. Thankfully, Dr. Richardson has additional training in this department. So, if you're looking for professional wisdom tooth extraction in Oshawa, Whitby, Brooklin, Courtice or Port Perry, you are welcome to book an appointment with us instead of waiting weeks for an outside referral.
Dental Abscess or Facial Swelling
Infection that has spread beyond the tooth, and the one emergency that should never be left to settle on its own. We treat the infection and the tooth that caused it.
Broken, Chipped or Cracked Tooth
Anything from a small chip to a fracture reaching the nerve. We have the expertise to rebuild the natural shape of chipped and worn out teeth in very few visits with less time in the chair. And we can handle an entire set of chipped or worn out teeth, not just one or two chipped or worn out teeth.
Pain After Recent Dental Work
If a filling, crown or root canal done at another office has started hurting and you don't feel comfortable going back, get in touch with us. At Ridgeview Dental we are always available to help you, whether you're a recurring patient or calling in for the first time. Schedule an appointment and we'll take care of you the best way we can.
Lost Filling or Crown
The tooth underneath is exposed, vulnerable and often painful. Our in-house 3D digital scanner and Dental 3D printer mean no goopy impressions and a faster turnaround on the repair.
Anxious Patients, Children and Special Needs
Emergencies involving anxious patients, children and patients with special needs: Dr. Richardson and Dr. Ryan are certified in multiple levels of sedation, such as nitrous oxide through IV conscious moderate sedation. Both dentists are experienced in treating patients who find dental treatment difficult. A dental emergency in Oshawa warrants a dental clinic that can book you in quickly and a team that is compassionate and experienced to calm you down and not rush you - and that's exactly how we work at Ridgeview Dental.
Knocked-Out Tooth
With fast action an adult tooth can often be saved and splinted back into place. If faced with a knocked out tooth, quickly pick it up by the crown, never the root. If it is dirty, rinse it briefly in milk, saline or saliva, and do not scrub it. Try to place it back in the socket straight away and bite gently on a clean cloth to hold it there. If you cannot, keep it in a cup of milk and bring it with you. Never let it dry out, and do not carry it in a tissue. The first 15 to 30 minutes matter most, so call us on your way. Do not try to reinsert a child's baby tooth, as that can damage the adult tooth developing underneath.
Extractions and Dental Implants
If a dental extraction is genuinely the right answer for your case, we will tell you plainly. Dr. Siciliano has additional training in dental implantology. So, if you're looking for a dental implant in Oshawa, Whitby, Courtice, Brooklin or Port Perry, just book a consultation with us. The conversation about replacing the tooth will happen with the person who would place the implant.
What to Do Before You Get Here

Here are some quick tips on how to handle an emergency until you arrive at your clinic or to emergency care:

Knocked-out tooth?
Quickly pick it up by the crown, never the root.

Toothache?
Rinse with warm salt water. Floss gently either side of the tooth in case food is trapped. Use a cold compress against your cheek for 15 minutes at a time. Keep your head slightly elevated when you lie down.

Broken tooth?
Save any pieces in milk or water. Rinse your mouth with warm water. Cover a sharp edge with a piece of sugar-free gum or dental wax so it does not cut your tongue.

Swelling?
Cold compress on the outside of the cheek. Do not apply heat. Call us the same day.

Bleeding?
Firm pressure with clean gauze for 30 minutes without peeking.

One thing not to do: never hold an aspirin against the gum or the tooth. It burns the tissue and does nothing for the pain.
What Happens at Your Dental Emergency Visit

We find out what is actually wrong. A focused exam and, where needed, a digital x-ray. Guessing is how people end up treated twice.

We get you comfortable. Pain relief comes first. Nothing else can be discussed properly while you are hurting.
We explain your options and what they cost, before we start. We accept CDCP and bill directly to insurance as well. We clearly explain what your insurance or the CDCP is likely to cover and what will be left for you. No treatment goes ahead until you have said yes.

We treat what we can on the day. Most emergencies can be resolved or stabilised in that first visit.

We book the follow-up if one is needed. Sometimes an emergency visit settles things and a permanent repair comes later. You will know the plan before you leave.
Anxious About Coming In? That's Normal

At Ridgeview Dental, we’re a team of family dentists in Oshawa, and we fully understand the multitude of reasons people put off calling a dentist. Both Dr. Calvin Richardson and Dr. Ryan Siciliano are experienced in treating nervous patients, children and patients with special needs. We offer sedation options for patients who need them, and we take the time to explain what is happening before it happens. We’re a compassionate dental clinic who value our patient’s comfort above everything else.
Why Oshawa Patients Choose Ridgeview Dental

Ridgeview is 100% locally owned and run by Dr. Calvin Richardson and Dr. Ryan Siciliano. Not a chain, not a corporate group. The dentists who own the practice are the dentists who treat you.
You see the same dentist each visit. That matters more in case of a dental emergency than people expect, because someone who knows your mouth and your history makes better and faster decisions.
At Ridgeview Dental, your comfort comes first. We are a family-centred practice rather than a volume-driven one. Emergency patients get time, not a conveyor belt.
Comprehensive care under one roof. Cleanings, fillings, root canals, crowns and bridges, implants, wisdom teeth and cosmetic work all happen here. Fewer referrals elsewhere means your emergency gets resolved faster and with better consistency of care. This puts you at ease as well.
At Ridgeview Dental, we make use of modern technology that makes visits quicker and more comfortable. Our in-house 3D digital scanner and Dental 3D printer mean no goopy impressions and a faster turnaround on the repair.
At Ridgeview Dental, we offer free on-site parking, a fully wheelchair accessible office, online booking, compassionate doctors, friendly staff and a dedicated kids' area. We try our best to make your, and your whole family’s, dental visit as comfortable as we possibly can. If you’re looking for a compassionate dentist in North Oshawa, Whitby, Brooklin, Courtice, Port Perry or in Oshawa, we’d be glad to hear from you.
A Dental Clinic That Accepts CDCP and Bills Direct to Insurance

At Ridgeview Dental, we always keep things black and white. Therefore, we will not quote you a number before we have looked at the tooth, as the honest answer depends on what is wrong. What we will do is explain the cost before we begin, and give you the options, which include:
Direct insurance billing. We bill your insurer directly wherever possible, so you are not paying the full amount up front and waiting for reimbursement.
We accept the Canadian Dental Care Plan. Emergency examinations are covered under the CDCP, and there is no frequency limit on them. How much of the treatment itself is covered by the CDCP varies from person to person, and the plan may pay less than the standard Ontario fee guide. We will walk you through your co-payment and any difference before treatment starts, so there are no surprises at the desk.
